CALL FOR NOMINATIONS OPEN: Award for human rights defenders in danger given by Front Line Defenders in 2023
The 2023 Front Line Defenders award for human rights defenders at risk nomination process is now open.
The Front Line Defenders Award was created in 2005 to recognize the efforts of HRDs who courageously contribute greatly to the advancement and defense of the human rights of others while taking significant personal risks. The Award gives the HRDs a larger national and worldwide platform to discuss and promote their work, bringing national and international attention to it.
With the introduction of the new structure in 2018, Front Line Defenders announced 5 Regional Award Winners, with one being selected as the Global Laureate by a jury made up of members of Ireland’s parliament from various political parties. In response, Front Line Defenders decided to designate all 5 regional champions as Global Laureates in 2021.
There will be one winner chosen from each of the following world regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe & Central Asia, and Middle East & North Africa. Front Line Defenders will honor all five as the 2023 Front Line Defenders Award Laureates.
Anyone may participate in the nomination process by nominating a group, organization, or community working on a human rights problem who is suffering serious risks as a result of their work or is functioning in an environment that is itself considered to be unstable. The Award’s goal is to increase the exposure of HRDs who are not typically acknowledged or recognized on a global scale. The Award shouldn’t, however, pose extra risks for which the HRD is unprepared.
